Is tonight worth it at Baishawan, Kenting?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
A 500-meter arc of white shell sand on the Hengchun Peninsula’s west coast, facing straight out into the strait, so the sun goes into open water with nothing in the way. It is one of Kenting’s two swimming beaches, quieter than the main strip at Nanwan, and the beach where Ang Lee shot the shoreline that stands in for Mexico at the end of Life of Pi, when Pi washes ashore.
The sand is soft enough for bare feet and the water stays shallow a long way out, so people wade through the last light. Food stalls and umbrella rental run along the back of the beach in season. Guanshan (see writeup here), Kenting’s famous sunset lookout, is ten minutes up the road and looks down over this same stretch of coast.
