Is tonight worth it at Caota Sand Dunes Geopark?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
Taiwan’s largest coastal dune field, eight kilometers of sand between the Laojie and Dajue river mouths on the Taoyuan coast, made a geopark in 2020. The dunes face straight west into the strait with a line of wind turbines along the shore, and the sunset shot everyone comes for is the turbines and the dune crests against the sky, with nothing built behind them.
There are two entrances with boardwalks, at Chaoyin in Dayuan and in Guanyin; the Chaoyin boardwalk is the main one. The sand is loose and the wind is constant, so cover your camera. Xucuogang Wetlands (see writeup here) is just north of the dunes, on the same coast.
