Is tonight worth it at Chenglong Wetland?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
Farmland until typhoons in 1986 and 1996 flooded a hundred hectares of subsiding land at Kouhu, drowning a shrine and the village graves; the Forestry Bureau leased it in 2005 and since 2010 an international environmental art project has stood installations in the water, built of oyster shells, driftwood and bamboo. The result is Yunlin’s best-known sunset: still, shallow water in every direction, the artworks and a wooden bridge standing in it as silhouettes, and the sky mirrored twice. The sea is three kilometers west, so the sun sets over the far bank of the lagoon and the fish ponds, not into the water.
There is no platform; you pick a stretch of roadside by the pieces you like. Calm wind gives the reflections, and there is no shade at all, so come in the last hour. Water levels are drawn down from September to March for the shorebirds, and the art festival rebuilds the pieces each April. The lanes are narrow and parking is roadside, which the villagers notice; be considerate.
