Is tonight worth it at Dagangshan?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
A long limestone ridge rising alone out of the plain at Alian, north of Kaohsiung, with Chaofeng Temple near the top and a network of trails through the caves and woods. The western edge of the ridge looks straight down the plain to the sea, and the lookouts along the Xiangsi Trail and by the temple are where locals come for the sunset and then the lights of Gangshan and Kaohsiung coming on below.
The trails are mostly paved and gentle, more a walk than a hike, and the ridge catches the breeze. Mt. Zhongliao and the Lianhua Pavilion (see writeup here) are the next ridge east, with the same view from higher up.
