Is tonight worth it at Fangyuan Sea-Sky Walk?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
A kilometer of raised boardwalk through the mangroves at Fangyuan, opened in 2021, that ends at a two-story platform signposted for the sunset. The intertidal flat here is up to six kilometers wide at low water, so you look west across mud and mangrove to the strait with the coastal wind turbines as silhouettes, and the sun goes into the sea beyond them. At low tide the oyster farmers’ ox carts still cross the flats past the entrance, the last place in Taiwan where oxen work the beds, and that is the signature picture.
The tide decides the evening: at high water the flats and the concrete causeway are under the sea; low water brings the carts and the mudskippers, and a rising tide brings reflections. The walk has north, middle and south entrances, a loop of 20 to 60 minutes, and no toilets, so use the temples’. Wanggong Fishing Port (see writeup here) with its lighthouse is just down the coast.
