The spot

Tainan’s southern beachfront, a long straight run of sand and sea wall below Wanli, with a bike path, a visitor center and a few beach bars along the top. The name is the sunset: the whole strip faces due west, and on a clear evening the light comes straight down the sand. It is a local evening-out place rather than a sight, with scooters lined up along the wall and people out on the breakwater.

The surf here is small and the beach wide and flat, which is why Tainan’s surfers paddle out at the end of the day. Yuguang Island (see writeup here) is ten minutes north, and the Qieding coast (see writeup here) continues south across the Erren River, with the double-museum bike path linking all three.
