Getting there & back
Is tonight worth it at Wuling, Hehuanshan?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
Wuling is the highest point you can drive to in Taiwan, a saddle on Hehuanshan at about 3,275 meters, and at that height the sunset happens below you as often as in front of you. On a clear evening the ridgelines of the Central Range go gray one behind the other, and the cloud that fills the valleys by afternoon turns orange from above.
It is cold up here at any time of year, and the weather changes quickly; bring a proper layer even in summer. The area around Yuanfeng is a designated dark-sky park, so if the sky is clear the stars after sunset are as good a reason to come as the sunset itself. Most people stay the night in Cingjing rather than drive down in the dark.
