The spot

The highest point of the Caoshan badlands on the Zuozhen–Longqi border, named for its elevation, 308 meters. The lookout faces west over the Moon World: bare gray mudstone ridges cut by gullies, with the Chianan Plain and the coast beyond them. It is the sunset partner to Erliao, the famous sunrise spot a few kilometers away, and the same landscape that fills with mist after a summer afternoon storm.

There is a road to the top and a viewing platform, open around the clock. The badlands hold almost nothing in haze, so this is a spot for a clear, dry evening; after rain in summer the light through the mist is the view people come for. Bring a light for the drive back down.
