The spot
The old railway bridge across the Kaoping River was the longest in Asia when it opened in 1913, and its steel trusses now stand as a heritage walkway between Dashu on the Kaohsiung bank and the riverside park on the Pingtung side. The river is wide and flat here, and the sun sets down its length with the trusses in silhouette.
Both banks have parkland and cycle paths; the Pingtung side is quieter and looks back at the bridge with the sun behind it.
