The spot

The Shanfu Ecological Walk (杉福生態廊道) is on the west coast of Xiaoliuqiu: a walkway through an old military bunker, its coral-stone passages opening onto a railed platform over the sea, with benches along the shore path for the wait. The platform faces straight west, so the sun goes down into open water with nothing in the way.

Xiaoliuqiu (also called Lambai Island) sits off Donggang, south of Kaohsiung, and the journey is the long part: Donggang is a trek even from Kaohsiung, though the ferry itself is short. Once you land, a scooter gets you anywhere on the island in minutes.

The Sunset Pavilion (see writeup here) is a few minutes south by scooter, Vase Rock (here) is on the north shore by the pier, and Xiaoshan Kanhai (here) is the café just up the coast. The island is small enough to try two or three of them in one evening.
