Getting there & back
Is tonight worth it at Sunset Pavilion, Xiaoliuqiu?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
Xiaoliuqiu (also called Lambai Island) is a small island south of Kaohsiung famous for its water activities and many small beaches. Due to its geographic location, it’s also a prime spot for sunset viewing, especially a classic ocean sunset.
Wherever you’re coming from, getting to Xiaoliuqiu is a bit of a long journey. Even from Kaohsiung it takes a long time to get to the ferry station to go to Xiaoliuqiu. But the ferry is short, and once you get on the island getting around is a breeze (most people use scooters, and the island is small so you can get to most places within just minutes).
The Sunset Pavilion (落日亭) is the roadside stop on the southwest shore: a pavilion and a railed platform above the coral shelf where the waves break, facing straight out to sea for the classic ocean sunset. The Shanfu Ecological Walk (see writeup here) is a few minutes north by scooter, Vase Rock (here) is on the north shore by the pier, and Xiaoshan Kanhai (here) is the café option above the west coast. You can go from one platform/roadside pull-off to another in minutes and catch most or all of the good sunset angles on the island in just one evening.
