The spot

Anping’s Sunset Platform is the classic Tainan seaside sunset: a wide, flat beach, the sun dropping straight into the Taiwan Strait, and people walking along the water’s edge or wading and swimming in it. The sand is so flat that the last of the tide leaves a thin sheet of water across it, and for the half hour around sunset that sheet turns into a mirror, so every person on the beach gets a silhouette and a reflection. It’s one of the easiest places in Taiwan to take a photo you’re happy with.

It gets busy in a good-natured way. Families come down for the evening and the crowd spreads out along the sand, so it never feels packed, but if you want a clean silhouette, walk further along the beach than you think you need to. Come at least half an hour before the listed sunset time – the reflection is at its best while the sun is still above the horizon.

For a different angle, head north along the coast on the 海岸觀光自行車道 bike path. It’s a 15-20 minute walk, or a few minutes on a bike, up the coast and around to Chongwu Sports Park, and along the way you’ll pass plenty of other people watching the sunset, especially around Sicao Bridge, where the river meets the sea.

There’s no hike at all – you park or step off the bus and you’re on the sand. Buses from Tainan Station come out to Anping, and a YouBike is an easy way to cover the last stretch or the ride up the coast. There’s parking for cars and scooters right next to the platform.
