The spot

The ferry pier on the Bali side of the Tamsui River, looking across the water at Tamsui’s old street and the hills of Datun behind it, with Guanyinshan at your back. The sun sets downriver to your left, so the river, the ferries and the Tamsui waterfront all catch the color, and the Danjiang Bridge now closes the view at the river mouth. The promenade runs for kilometers in both directions and fills with bikes and families on weekend evenings.

The cheapest way across is the ferry from Tamsui, a five-minute ride that is itself a good place to be at sunset. From the pier the bike path runs west to Wazihwei and the fishing-pier beach (see writeup here), where the sea view opens out, and Bali’s old street behind the pier has the food.
