The spot
A ridge-top park on the Dadu plateau south of Taichung with a wide view over the city basin to the east and out across the coastal plain to the strait in the west. The sun goes down over the plain and the sea beyond it, and then the whole of Taichung lights up below you, which is what the park is famous for.
There are several terraces along the ridge road; the ones facing west are for the sunset, the ones facing east for the city afterward.
I came on an August evening. From the boardwalk on the west side the sun went down over the plain with the Dadu River catching the last of the light below, and twenty minutes later the lawn by the steps was full of people waiting for Taichung to light up.
