The spot

Xiaoliuqiu’s landmark, a coral rock narrower at the base than at the top, standing in shallow water on the island’s north shore a short walk from the ferry pier. It faces northwest, so in the evening the sun drops into the sea beside it, and the snorkelers who spend the afternoon here with the green turtles are replaced by people lining the shore for the light.

Come early to get a spot on the rocks with the rock between you and the sun. The ferry back to Donggang runs into the evening, but check the last sailing.

For the straight-into-the-sea sunset the island is known for, the Shanfu Ecological Walk (here) and the Sunset Pavilion (here) are on the west and southwest shores, and Xiaoshan Kanhai (here) is the café above the west coast.
