Getting there & back
Is tonight worth it at Yuguang Island?
The app scores every spot from the forecast at its own sunset hour, with the seven-day outlook and the last train home. Six spots are free.
The spot
A small island joined to Anping by a bridge, with a crescent beach called Moon Bay facing straight west into the Taiwan Strait. A stand of pines runs along the back of the sand, and on a good evening the beach fills with people for the sunset. It is Tainan’s most popular sunset spot, and just south of the Sunset Platform (see writeup here).
The bay is shallow and wide, so the last of the tide leaves a mirror across the sand like the platform does. Swimming is not encouraged; wading is universal.
I was here on a hazy November evening with surfers still in the water and the sun a small red disc going into the strait; even in that haze the whole beach stopped to watch.
