The spot

Taiwan’s oldest lighthouse, built in 1875, stands on a cliff at the southwestern tip of Xiyu, the far end of Penghu’s chain of bridges. It looks straight out over the Taiwan Strait, and there is nothing west of here but sea, so the sun sets into the water with the white tower and the low stone walls in front of it.

The lighthouse grounds keep visiting hours, so the sunset is usually watched from the headland and the road outside the wall. It is windy, noticeably more so than Magong.
